Planning a Home Cinema: The Decisions You Must Make Before Buying

Seating distance, acoustics, light control and budget order — the planning choices that determine whether your cinema room sings or disappoints.

The most common cinema-room regret is not the wrong projector. It is a beautifully specified system installed in a room that was never going to support it.

Decide the room's job first

A dedicated cinema optimises for one thing and can be treated aggressively. A media room shares duties with daily living and must compromise on treatment and ambient light. Both can be excellent; conflating them is what produces disappointment.

Acoustics before electronics

Room modes below 200Hz dominate what you hear, and no amount of amplifier quality corrects them. Budget for bass trapping, first-reflection absorption and a diffusive rear wall before you compare speaker brands.

Target numbers

  • Reverberation time around 0.25–0.35 seconds across the mid band.
  • Seating at roughly 1.3 to 1.6 times screen width for a cinematic viewing angle.
  • Front row no closer than one-fifth of room length from the screen wall.
  • At least 30cm of clearance behind the rear seating row for rear-channel effect.

Light control is not optional

Contrast is destroyed by reflected light long before it is destroyed by projector limitations. Dark matte surfaces, blackout shading and zero light from behind the seating do more for perceived picture quality than doubling projector spend.

Order your budget correctly

Room treatment, then loudspeakers, then amplification, then the display, then the seating, then the automation that ties it together. Reversing that order is the single most reliable way to spend a great deal and enjoy it less.

You are not buying equipment. You are buying the room's behaviour, and equipment is one component of it.

Get these decisions right on paper and the build itself becomes straightforward. Get them wrong and you will spend the next two years trying to correct them with purchases.
